Dark Slavic Tales

Polish folk tales, once told with the lights out.

Dark Slavic Tales are dark Polish folk tales for adults, told as audio dramas. Godmother Death, the strzyga, the robber Madej, the topielec, the Noon Witch: someone once told these tales by the stove, and someone else wrote them down. You hear the adult, dark version, not a softened one.

Each episode begins with a record that a 19th-century collector made in a village, often word for word: Oskar Kolberg, Stanisław Ciszewski, Seweryn Udziela and others. All these collections are in the public domain. From them we take the skeleton of the story and tell the rest anew: the dialogue, the names and some of the scenes are ours.

Every episode ends with “What the Source Says”: who recorded the tale, where and when, what comes from the source and what we added. Each episode page also has the full list of sources and changes.
